- Hi, I'm Neff! Let's talk about the stages of kidney disease. We'll take it one step at a time.
- Chronic kidney disease, or CKD, means your kidneys have been hurt over time. Now they have a harder time doing their jobs.
- CKD is sorted into five stages. Think of them like steps on a ladder. The stages help us plan your care.
- Your stage comes mostly from a blood test called eGFR. It shows how well your kidneys filter your blood. A urine test helps show any damage, too.
- Stage one means your kidneys still filter well, but there are signs of damage. Stage five means kidney failure. The steps in between show more loss of kidney function.
- One test is not the whole story. We often check again to be sure. The change has to last three months or more.
- CKD often changes slowly. Taking care of your blood pressure and blood sugar may help slow it down. The sooner you know, the sooner you can act.
- So ask us. What is my stage? What is my eGFR? How does it compare to last time? If it stays the same, that can mean your care is working.
- We're here to help. Bring your questions to every visit. Let's take care of your kidneys together!
